The City of Kilkenny can be traced back to the time of St. Canice in the late sixth century.
Very little physical evidence remains of this former era, as the city was burned to the ground in 1179 by the King of limerick, Donal Mor O'Brien, in an attempt to rid it of its new occupiers - the Anglo Normans.
It seems that nothing only the round Tower at St. Canices Cathedral was left standing after the burning.
The Anglo Normans did return a decade or so later and proceeded to construct a beautiful medieval walled town with it's Castle, Churches, winding streets and many other fine buildings.
